Spent a week in Houston and could not have had a better experience at Crossfit Roughnecks with several drop-ins. Trainers Alex and Eric were both very welcoming and knowledgeable, providing helpful tips on my technique – I felt like a regular after one visit. The box itself is very convenient - close to Minute Maid Park – and had plenty of space as well as weights and equipment. I travel frequently for work and this is one of the best, if not the best, drop-in experience. Crossfit Roughnecks will be my go-to place in Houston and I highly recommend it to crossfitters of all abilities.
I live in San Francisco and travelled to Houston for training with my company. I looked up for crossfit gyms in the downtown area close from my hotel (Westin) and roughnecks came up. They have pretty flexible and convenient drop in policies including 2X and 3X day passes. As I stayed in Houston for 4 nights I went for the day pass for $35 - I thought it was a pretty good deal. As for the coaches they were very welcoming and cool. As for the WODs they were awesome. I managed to get my crossfit fix while I was away from my home box. The Gym is big and they have pretty convenient schedules - a 5:30am and a 6:30am class that allows you to get your WOD done before going too the office. I really enjoyed my experience there. They were also pretty accommodating with my buddy Calderon (another drop in) who just started crossfitting. They encouraged him and coached him as one of their own members. Thanks Guys!
I spent a week in Houston for a conference and loved having the option to drop-in to this box! The coaches were accommodating and knowledgeable and the workouts definitely pushed me hard. I highly recommend checking this box out - whether you are in the area permanently or just for travel.
I had to stay in Downtown Houston for business and wanted a box to drop in to for a WOD. CrossFit Roughnecks was the closet to my hotel so I chose them. I'm so glad I did! Alex was so accommodating and welcoming. The box was so nice and had AC too! I've dropped into many boxes while traveling and this was one of the most positive experiences I've had. So if your in Downtown Houston for any reason, make sure you visit CrossFit Roughnecks, you won't be sorry!!
I visited Alex's box when I was in Houston for a 2 week training. CFR is AMAZING! I had such a great experience, especially being new to crossfit and at the time I had only been crossfitting for 6 weeks, but Alex, Erik and the other coaches were all great. I learned a lot about my lifts, and got a great workout. The programming at CFR is also very good, very challenging and a lot of variety. Even though I haven't been a visitor in 5 months, I still look at the Wod's a few times a week, since I respect the programming so much. If I lived in Houston I would definitely be a member of CFR, and the minute I get an opportunity to stay in Houston, I will be there! If you are visiting or on the fence about CF, go to CF Roughnecks, you will really enjoy your time there!! And the members are all so friendly, I went to the 5:30am class when I was visiting but everyone was still super nice and friendly, although we were all half sleep. Also, the box itself is BEAUTIFUL, the way Alex has it set up, looks super cool and there is AC, which is always nice :)
Great facility, with some of the nicest people I have met at a box. Great direction and insight, especially on the illusive hspu! Thanks and see you next time I am in town.
I was in Houston on a work trip during the Crossfit open, and whilst it was my first year taking part I really wanted to get all my workouts judged. I emailed the team at Crossfit Roughnecks and Alex & Chad were more than happy to accomodate my request and were very welcoming & encouraging. My company send 900-1000 employees a month to Houston for work, and every day more are looking to fictional fitness to stay fit for the job. I have no hesitation to recommend Crossfit Roughnecks to my colleges and boxmates here in Dubai. I love my T-shirt too, super comfy!
Dropped in 3 times at this box while in Houston for work, coaches were Erik and Winston. Great, demanding WOD's and friendly, smart coaching. Had a chance to drop in during their open gym session as well and was treated like a regular. I genuinely hope I have a reason to come back to Houston, because visiting Roughnecks was the high point of my trip. It's a great Crossfit box.
I am very picky when it comes to which crossfit gym I join. I've traveled around and dropped in to a lot of different boxes and know exactly what I like and what I don't like. I've been a member at CFR for over a year now and can honestly say it has everything I like. First and foremost is a knowledgable coach who truly cares for everyone in the gym, whether you're tweaking your form to get it just right on a 315lb clean or simply trying to develop the range of motion to do an air squat, Alex Retzlaff wants to help you accomplish it. Another great aspect is the layout of the gym with sectioned off rooms to break up different areas. There is also plenty of equipment that is constantly being upgraded and maintained to the highest of standards. CFR is an awesome gym and I would highly recommend it to everyone, no matter what your skill level.
I was in town on business and dropped in. This is a Great Box. Fantastic trainers with plenty of room and up to date equipment.....It's what a crossfit box should be. Good location downtown and we could walk from our hotel and convention center.
Check it out if you are in town.
As a frequent Visitor to other gyms I was impressed with Roughnecks. Don't let the name scare you, the members were welcoming and Alex (coach/owner) was on top of the class...great warmup, some skill work (which I appreciated) and a gnarly WOD. I would return for sure. Alex clearly has a background in the Olympic lifts which is important.
Dropped in for a few days while in town for work. I agree with the other reviewers. Alex and his other coaches are extremely knowledgeable. They had me focus on form over weight and gave great tips - especially for me who is about 7 months into Crossfit. They clearly have created a culture of community; everyone was incredibly friendly and it made the experience even better.
Location-wise it is within walking distance of a number of Houston hotels which made it really easy to attend while working downtown.
Just fair warning - I definitely did one of the hardest WODs of my life while there.
Visiting from out of town and dropped in for a quick WOD at Crossfit Roughnecks.
Gym layout was good, equipment was clean and well maintained, and they even had showers.
It was an open gym session with a do-it-yourself WOD, but the coach was still very attentive to the various folks training and offered several good lifting tips.
I will definitely go back on future Houston trips.
